The Best of the Recent Releases

According to my non-scientific estimate, between 2,000 and 3,000 jazz CDs will be released this year. By comparison, Downbeatreceived fewer than 500 albums to review back in 1959. So those who fret about the future of jazz are clearly looking at the demand and not the supply—which is growing faster than the fan base by any measure.Dresden

Much of this music is formulaic, yet every month exciting projects are released—many of them never finding their audience because they are lost in the glut of product. For this reason, jazz.com features one track per day of exceptional merit, and presents it to site visitors as our Song of the Day. Our goal is to cut through the noise and introduce listeners to outstanding new music they might otherwise miss.

Double Booked

Below are links to our reviews of the tracks highlighted during the last month. As always, our featured songs include both the well-known stars of jazz and less familiar artists who also deserve to be heard. The high profile releases this month, include excellent projects by Robert Glasper (jazz meets hip-hop), Bud Shank (his last CD recorded shortly before his death earlier this year), and Jan Garbarek (his first ECM leader date in five years). Roberta Gambarini, Stefon Harris, John Abercrombie and James Carter will also be familiar to jazz fans and have fine new releases on the market. But listeners are also advised to check out the less familiar names here, such as guitarists Rez Abbasi and Kobie Watkins, alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso, pianist Mark Levine or Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey.

Woodbrain

We always throw in an occasional ringer from outside the jazz realm. This month the outliers on our distribution curve include a highly recommended electric blues project from the Oregon-based band Woodbrain, and an orchestral work by John Adams. Check out these and other tracks below, where you will find links to each review. There you will find a full assessment, complete personnel and recording info, a ranking from 0 to 100, and a further link to a third-party vendor where you can purchase a (legal) download.

Acid Rockers

Acid Rockers

It cames  in 1998, but musically, thematically, it led straight into 2001 and directly to our current moment. Anxious with ruminations on war and death and technology and love but celebratory in it Acid Rockers hopefulness and joy, the album explodes with ideas and fulfills all its promise. The production is ingenious, pristine, unprecedented, maxing out on humongous drums and alien sounds but never sacrificing warmth or subtlety. And the songwriting is Wayne Coyne at his best—allegorical, universal, but also heartbreakingly detailed and emotive.

Acid Masters

Acid Masters

Braindance Coincidence is a collection of tracks from  Acid Masters artist that are on Aphex Twins record label Rephlex. Aphex twin is probably the UK’s most well known electronic musician, and these tracks follow in his footsteps. The tracks play on the idea of electronic sound and what can be done with it and so dont really follow a particular genre. There are styles taken from drum and bass, trance, dub, but they are fitted into the Rephlex mould which is generally described as being ‘Glitchy, atmospheric, deep and mad’. If you are interested in and enjoy electronic music you will absolutely love this. It is filled to the brim with tracks, some which sound like they have been made using modern equipment, some which sound slightly older, but they all have that same feeling of spaced out electronica. Tracks like Cylobs Rewind and Squarepushers remix of Chaos AD’s ‘Psultan’ take you into the hyper regions of synthed out drum and bass. Overall it is an electronic music lovers dream come true.

Ace of Clubs

Ace of Clubs

Mery and Dipu discover the parcel in the raincoat, but it falls out and Harry finds it after Pinkie goes back to the club. Benny is already looking for the missing parcel, and Rita, who is in love with him, realises that Benny is involved with the gangsters. At rehearsal the next afternoon, Harry comes by to see Pinkie. Detective-lnspector Warrilove arrives to investigate a jewel robbery and shooting. He suspects Snyder. Benny discourages Pinkie from becoming involved with Harry. That evening Snyder and Ace of Clubs his associate, Guy, kidnap Harry during the show, but he escapes. Pinkie, afraid for Harry’s safety, promises Benny that she will get the parcel. Harry is hidden, and after Benny leaves, he and Pinkie meet. The next day, Harry return with the parcel, suggesting that they give it to the police. Pinkie disagrees, and they argue. That evening, one of the girls mistakes the parcel for her birthday present and opens it, finding the purloined necklace. Snyder and Gus pick up the parcel in exchange for cash. Rita hears that the stolen necklace has been traced to the club. She asks the gangsters to leave. In the club, Warrilove notices the necklace, which the birthday girl is wearing, and he follows her. Snyder and Gus open the parcel to find the birthday present, a pair of falsies. They return to the club, and Worrilove catches them. All ends happily for Benny and Rita as well as Pinkie and Harry.
